Your Book As A Membership Site

With the publication of my first book, Take Action! Revise Later, I’m coming up with creative ways to market the book, and enhance the experience for readers. And I thought I’d share these ideas with you in case you have your own book you’d like to actually turn into larger profits.
Today, I’ll share that I’m turning my book into a membership site.
Why?
- To give more ways for people to learn from what I’ve written, no matter where they live or how they like to learn best
- To give readers a way to become an affiliate so they can earn money telling others about the book
- To deliver the audiobook version of TARL in a protected way
- To make it easy for me to add additional benefits down the road (in true TARL fashion!)
- To increase the profitability of my book
Here’s a few things I’m doing to turn my book into a membership site…
To market the book, I had already set up a WordPress blog over at TakeActionReviseLater.com. I then installed Digital Access Pass membership software for WordPress, which allows me to protect the premium content, track affiliate sales, sell memberships using Paypal, and communicate with buyers with the built-in autoresponder (or with my Aweber account connected to it).
Currently, I’m in the process of creating the audio book version of TARL. Someday, I’ll hit the studio and record the “professional version”, and maybe get Morgan Freeman or Ben Kingsley to read it for me.
Until then, I’m using my AudioTechnica USB mic and Camtasia software.
Instead of just creating an audio file, by using Camtasia I am actually creating a “read along” video version at the same time. Each chapter of the book is done as a separate video project, and I’m publishing both the MP3 and MP4 version of the recordings. Later on, I’ll publish the videos as ready for iPhone and iPad. But I haven’t upgraded my Camtasia yet. And I may just use Easy Video Player 2 to convert them later.
With my membership software running the process, I now have the ability to sell 3 different versions of my book:
- On Amazon (the least profitable but easiest to find)
- As an audio book, with the read along version as a bonus, available chapter by chapter (all at once, or dripped out daily over a month)
- Bulk orders outside of Amazon to independent book stores, retailers, event hosts, associations, Chambers of Commerce etc.
And sometime in the future, I may add additional membership levels that will enhance the readers’ experience even more!

p.s. Almost forgot, the newest version of DAP just released included integration with vBulletin forum software (along with other forums). So, I could eventually create a premium members forum for buyers of the book to discuss, connect, and grow together!
