the Care Leavers' Association

This is an excellent resource for people of any age who've been 'in care', in 'A Home' or 'Looked After Children'.

I am of that ilk - aged 10 - 15 - and had both joyful and miserable experiences along the way, all of which taught me a great deal about life, love, laughter, loss and lots more.

Later in life, I ran an Adolescent Therapeutic unit in North London for eight years. The 150 or so young ment who lived with us over the years, taught me a great deal more about resentment and resilience, defiance and determination, depths of pain so profound and pernicious that it beggered belief.

Some of the young people - aged 12 - 18 - who had suffered most severely, had a fierce and wonderful spirit that, despite everything, refused to be quenched. That go them into lots of trouble, of course, and we were able to help many of them return to full time education, or rehabilitate them with their families.

I have an unshakeable belief in the human capacity to transcend and evolve from past traumas. I treat all the people I supervise, coach or train, as if they are robust and resilient - especially if they treat themselves as if they don't have the potential to be all that they might become.

If you are, or know others who are Care Leavers, please forward or share this post.

Network Meetings in Manchester, Leeds and London

New dates, times and venues for the next set of regional Care Leaver network meetings If you need advice, support, guidance or just someone to talk then please come along to the meeting closet to you.

The meetings are relaxed, informal get-togethers providing a chance to socialise and meet other care leavers. They are an opportunity to find out more about the CLA and see what opportunities there are for getting more involved in care leaver issues. For example, access to childhood care records, education, employment, training, housing, current leaving care provision, the needs of adults with care experience and the needs of care leavers in the criminal justice system.

Apology for Abuse to Adults and Children In Care and Other "e" petition

The CLA encourages people to sign an e-petition calling on the government to apologise to all people who were abused whilst in care. The petition has been established by CLA member Dr Peter McParlin. The CLA will also be encouraging other organisations to join together in the campaign to persuade the government to offer an offical apology. Follow the link to sign the petition.

The CLA is also encouraging people to sign another e petion calling on the government to re-establish the National Centre for Excellence in Residnetial Child Care.
