Many (most?) people live any where but NOW; fretting and regretting, yearning for something other to such an extent that they miss the beauty, the possibilities of what's going on in THIS place at this particular moment, and ignoring their potential.
EVERYthing, in my opinion, happens NOW, in this heart-beat, this blink of the eye, this intake of breath.
If we suffer from painful memories, the pain is happening NOW and it is not so much caused by yesteryear's traumas but by our relationship with the memories.
The pain might be emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual, but it can only happen in the moment.
Sadly, I think we do not learn from our mistakes, which is why we keep on repeating them.
Yes, I think we should prepare ourselves for the possibility of the human race obliterating itself.
Not in in a pessimistic, shroud-waving way but as a constant reminder to make the most of what's on offer right now. To treat ourselves with extraordinary respect, to treat the people close to us with, at the very least, consideration, patience, generosity of spirit, simple kindness, the benefit of the doubt.
Ponder the end of days and give of your best to this fleeting moment, to this friendship, this parent / child / sibling / neighbour / stranger.
The only 'reason' to behave in that way is because you choose to. Because you can choose to be the way you'd like the world to be.
Ask and expect nothing in return. Accept that other people are also spiritually exhausted, physically drained of energy, etiolated by worry, overwhelmed by the demands and consequences of foolish choices and thoughtless actions. They (you or I) have lttle left to give if we feel so low.
Accept that other people are not your parents - unless they ARE your parents, in which case they did their job. And if they were the worst parents who ever lived, you are NOW the grown up who is responsible for your own well-being.
Live with passion, speak with truth, walk in the light whilst acknowledging the darkness
