Excellent advice from danfresnourban

...and for you if you write for hub pages....

Rich Content Is The Best Way To Go

danfresnourban profile image
I recently realized that a hub page with a lot of rich content is the only way to go. Some hubs are too short to sufficiently cover a topic. Superficial pages that only scratch the surface are less enjoyable to readers and search engines do not drive traffic to them unless the topic is very obscure. Short hubs do not take very long to create because they have not been researched and little or no effort has been put into making the hub visually appealing.

It can be tempting to whip out one of these quick hubs because with each new hub, there is almost always some traffic. Avoid the temptation to write a short hub. Superficial hubs generally get little or no organic search traffic. Google's algorithms know how long a viewer stays on a particular page, this information is used in conjunction with other factors to determine how likely your page is going to be relevant to a particular search.

Google's goal with every search is to deliver the searcher to a page that will engage them and keep them around for a while. This makes sense because Google earns money when people click on ads that are on a page. Logically, a viewer is more likely to click on an ad if the person is on a page for a long time.

Considering Google controls about 90 percent of all search traffic. It makes sense to consider what Google looks at as you create a hub. I am not saying that you should create a hub based on what you think Google wants, I am saying that you should create hubs that you believe readers will want to read and you should do this because Google is more likely to drive traffic to your page when people want to read it.

Evergreen hubs

An evergreen hub is a hub about a topic that will never become stale or outdated. A classic example would be a hub about Casey Anthony. I have personal knowledge about Casey Anthony hubs, I wrote about six of them during her jury trial. Each hub about Casey Anthony did very well during the trial, however now those hubs receive very little traffic.

A better alternative to the topic of the Casey Anthony trial would have been celebrity trials. Next year most people will have forgotten about Casey Anthony however it seems there is always a celebrity in trouble. You can leverage the advantages of quality writing when you write about evergreen topics.

In the long run, it is in your best interest to create interesting content that people want to read because pageviews will continue to add up over time. Content rich hubs start off getting decent traffic and over time can see an increase in daily traffic. This is because as more and more people find your hub, and they stay on the hub long enough to read it all the way to the end, search engines will deliver more viewers to the hub.

Earn $100 Per Day

The catalyst for my realization that longer, content-rich hubs are superior to short hubs was a number crunching session that I had the other day. Here is how it went. I wanted to know how many hubs I would have to write to average $100 per day in passive income. Hubpages gives all the information you need to calculate this. I will cover the Hubpage Ad Program here, but you can use this same process with Google's Adsense program.

The first thing you want to do is navigate to the Earnings page for your Hubpages account. Then click on the HubPages Ad Program Reports. You will see a page that is titled Summary. Under the field marked Last Month, find the CPM amount. This will be a dollar figure between $5.00-$10.00. CPM stands for Cost Per Thousand Impressions. In other words how much would you earn for every one thousand impressions.

Next decide how much you want to earn everyday. I used $100.00, you may want $250.00 per day or a different amount. Whatever amount you want to earn, take that number and divide it by your CPM. My CPM is currently $8.70 so I divided 100 by 8.7 to come up with 11.49. Remember that we are dealing with thousands of impressions, so you have to multiply the number you get by 1,000. That means that I would have to have 11,500 page views per day to earn $100.

Leverage Your Time

The power of quality content is that it will continue to bring traffic to your hubs long after you have written the hub. The superficial hub runs out of steam quickly. When you devote that extra time and energy into creating interesting, informative or engaging hub, you will continue to reap the benefits indefinitely. The 'down and dirty' quick hub will wither away to the nether regions of the Internet never to be seen again after a few days.

Quickly, it becomes apparent that writing inferior hubs is a waste of time. It is the equivalent of completing online surveys for $2.50. Once you have worked for a buck or two, you do not earn anymore money. Quality content provides passive income over time. With Google's recent Panda update, this has never been more true.Once you have written a number of high quality hubs you can decrease the time you spend writing hubs and focus on other methods of earning income or going on vacation.

Quality Content

You may be asking what does all of this have to do with quality content. Stay with me, I am getting to it. The next thing I did was calculate how many hubs I would have to have to write to get 11,500 pageviews to my hubs. To calculate this I looked at the total views for all of my hubs over the last 24 hours, then I divided it by the number of published hubs I had. It looked like this with my numbers: 246 views divided by 14 hubs = 17 views per hub. With this information I was able to get an idea of how many hubs I would have to write to earn $100 per day, the result was somewhat discouraging.

By my calculations, I would have to write approximately 676 hubs to earn $100 per day. Here comes the the quality content part. If my hubs were so engaging that people shared them with their friends on social networks and read them from start to finish, so that search engines delivered them to people searching for relevant information, the amount of page views per hub, per day would be much higher.

Lets look at how higher page views per day, per hub affects the goal of earning $100 per day. If my hubs received an average of 50 pageviews per day, I would not have to have as many hubs. Here is how it would look, divide 11,500 by 50 instead of 17, you find that I only need to write 230 hubs to earn $100 per day. That is a huge difference, I can write almost a third of the hubs I would have to write if my hubs only received marginal page views. The important thing to remember is that I am not spending three times as much time on each hub, in fact I could probably spend about twice the amount of time on the quality hubs as I would spend on the short hub.

Update: I used page views for the last 24 hours for the calculations above. More accurate information can be obtained using the page views for the last seven days or past 30 days. Using the larger data set should account for unusual variances.

Proof Read

A single typo can have a devastating effect on your content. When a person reads a typo, they think "this person did not value my time enough to proof read their article." Everyone is in a hurry these days, we want to publish the article as soon as we can.Whatever you do, make sure you do not publish content that has a typo.

The last thing you should do before clicking the Publish button is proof read the content. When I say proof read, I am talking about reading the content out loud to yourself. If there is someone who can read the hub before you publish it, that is even better. Once you have re-read your content, or have had someone else read it, and you are certain that there are no typo's, you can publish your high quality content.

Update: I have an embarrassing admission on the issue of typos. It seems that this hub had a typo when it was originally published. A very helpful hubber was kind enough to bring it to my attention and I corrected it. After you have proof read your hub it can be helpful to have someone else read it.
