Authors' World
Welcome to a new (flat) world for authors. If you want to participate
in a publishing revolution that expands access to information &
knowledge, while still generating handsome royalties, this Flat World
might be for you!
Who is Flat World Knowledge?
We were started by long-time publishing industry execs driven by their
conviction that the old model was broken, and that there was a better
way to serve the needs of authors, faculty, and students. With trusted
colleagues and advisors, they devised a disruptive business model,
built around great authors, that is changing the future of
this great industry.
What are we looking for in an author?
You are a highly accomplished & committed teacher. You can bring
vibrant teaching to the printed (or digital) page. You are known for
your scholarship. You may have experience writing textbooks – more
than half of our authors do. Or, you just have a killer idea and the
chops to get it done. You’re for us!
What is an open textbook?
It is a great book by a great author, peer-reviewed, professionally
edited & developed, and published under a Creative
Commons
license.
Faculty may tailor the book to their needs. Students may access the
book free online or buy an affordable print, audio, or handheld
format. Students get choice; faculty get control; authors earn rapid
market share, greater royalties over time, and do some good!
Why publish with Flat World?
Because you care. You want to deliver unparalleled content to students
but don’t think they should have to take out a loan to pay for it! You
want to be well-compensated (check out

by Chris Anderson). You want to partner with your publisher, not feel
like a contractor. You want to retain your copyright. YOU GET IT – you
know the time to act is now – no second-mover status for you. You want
to publish with Flat World Knowledge.
Author Testimonials
We love our authors. They seem to like us, too. OK, maybe it is the
business model and the royalties – you be the judge.
Know someone who would find this whole Flat World thing interesting? Or
one who is writing a textbook or should be? By all means…

Why should I publish with Flat World Knowledge? The direct approach - why beat around the bush? Just get right to it. Simply put, you believe in open education, but you also believe that you should be able to get paid for your work. Open education does NOT mean free education. Of all the formats we offer, only one of them is open access. But we believe that if you open up access, then there is the potential for greater rewards—for the publisher and the author.
How do I get started? The best way to start is with a brief proposal, so that we can get an idea of your goals for the project. We don't want you to have to spend a lot of time on it. Really — we are just looking for a page or maybe two. The key is to be very concise. The next step, should we decide to proceed, would be to test market interest with this proposal. Having a writing sample would help, but it's not required.
What is “open education” at Flat World?Flat World Knowledge innovates by applying the principles of “open source” to the traditional publishing model. We believe in copyright, and we also believe in our authors earning money. In fact, it’s critical to our model. Motivated authors write better books. We use a Creative Commons license, meaning that instructors who adopt your book have the ability to edit the content so long as they (a) attribute the author/publisher (b) share the resulting derivative work under the same license (c) do not engage in commercial activity around their derivative.
So you’re like a wiki then? This is a common misconception. We are NOT a wiki platform; we are a publisher. We subject your manuscript to the same rigorous development process as any other publisher. It may seem painful at times, but really—it’s better for the book in the end. So when you’re done with it, YOUR ORIGINAL VERSION REMAINS INTACT, forever.
So how does the “open source” part work?Suppose an instructor loves your book, except for one thing - they use a different approach to your coverage of Chapter 5. They go to the Web-hosted version, and create a COPY of your original version. They can now do whatever they like to their copy, and it will “track changes” so that you can see the difference between their work and your original work. They click “publish,” and the new book (with the new Chapter 5) goes live! They get a unique product identifier to give to their class, so that students can access the “new” version.
