A Switch in Time saves ...?

Here is the blurb for a short presentation I'm giving later this week.

This will also be one of series of London workshops being planned over the next few months. Let me know if you'd like to be informed. Go well

Clean and Crafty exploration of Reversal Theory:

Reversal theory is organised around a series of metamotivational states, organised into four pairs called "domains". Each domain represents two (states) - opposite forms of motivation - only one of which in each pair can be active at a time. We reverse between the states in each pair depending on a number of factors, including our inherent tendency to adopt one style over the other. The switches are instantaneous!

The four pairs (or domains) are as follows:

  • Means-Ends - "Telic" (or "Serious") and "Paratelic" (or "Playful") refer to whether one is motivated by achievement and future goals, or the enjoyment of process in the moment.

  • Rules - "Conforming" and "Rebellious" (or "Negativistic") refer to whether one enjoys operating within rules and expectations; or whether one wishes to be free and push against these structures.

  • Transactions - Mastery" and "Sympathy" relate to whether one is motivated by transacting power and control; or by care and compassion.

  • Relationships - "Autic" (or "Self") and "Alloic" (or "Other") refer to whether one is motivated by self interests (personal accountability and responsibility) or by the interests of others (altruism and transcendence).
